ARRA Funding @ Work in Glendale

The City of Glendale is hard at work in bringing federal stimulus dollars to improve the quality of life of those who live in Glendale.  In the coming months, the City expects to receive several ARRA grants in the following areas:

• Community Development:  The City has received $597,820 in Community Development Block Grant – Recovery “CDBG-R” funds to generate jobs, improve slum and blight situations, and to benefit an area of low to moderate income.  To see a specific list of the projects that will be funded with CDBG-R funds, click here. 
  
  
• Public Housing: The city has received $319,325 in ARRA funds to remodel the kitchens at the Lamar Public Housing Complex. Work was completed in July 2009 to update the cabinets, countertops, appliances and install new tile in 51 units. The Lamar Public Housing Complex is located at 61st and Lamar Road and was originally constructed in 1951. • Energy Efficiency and Conservation: The City has received $2.34 million in “Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Funds” (EEBG). The purpose of this federal grant is to assist cities in developing comprehensive energy efficiency and conservation strategies. These include adopting practices that reduce energy use and green house gas emissions, implementing community programs that will reduce current and future energy use, and creating jobs that help improve the local economy. • Public Safety: On April 8, 2009, the City of Glendale Police Department applied for $1,282,615 in ARRA ”COPS Hiring Recovery Program” funds to hire 5 new police officers for Glendale. In the first round of grant awards, Glendale did not receive funding for this grant, but may receive an award in a second round of funding. Public Safety did receive the Maricopa County 2009 Local Justice Assistance Grant. The purpose of this grant-funded project is to purchase new software for the Police Department’s CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) and RMS (Records Management System).  Items included in this replacement package would include modules for booking, records management, dispatch, field reporting, property and evidence management and crime analysis. This funding will enhance the current system to allow accessibility of system via the internet and will enhance the police dispatch center backup abilities.
  
  
• Transportation Improvements: In addition to $9.25 million in ARRA funding that will be used by the Arizona Department of Transportation to widen the 75th Avenue Bridge over the Loop 101, the City’s Department of Transportation has received more than $6 million in additional ARRA funds for a variety of improvements to Glendale’s transportation system. • Glendale Received Neighborhood Stabilization Funds: Glendale received $6.1 million in stimulus money called Neighborhood Stabilization Funds or NSP, which is a one-time, federally funded program designed to mitigate the impact of foreclosed properties in communities.  For more information, click here.
